The Sixth Sense (Shyamalan, 1999, US)

The Sixth Sense

The sound in the opening sequence of this film, is very spooky at some points as the music starts to pick up and gets louder. This gives clues to the audience on what this film could be based on, for example it could be a horror or a mystery film. The clues warn the audience with what they are going to be watching whether it is going to be intense, thrilling or exciting where they are engrossed in the film.

The editing in this sequence, is a black background at the start when it is presenting the titles which fade, this also makes the film seem to be quite creepy. The black background represents the mood to be scary as black and dark is used to make people feel fear.

Mise en scene
The room in this sequence is old and is set in a basement, the lighting  is low key which makes it more frightening and intense to the audience. Also it makes the audience question what is going to be in the basement as it is giving off a dark effect for the audience to be watching. Moreover, darkness comes across as scary for a lot of people so this makes it more intense because if anything did appear it could make the audience jump.

The woman in this opening sequence is wearing heels and a dress, which shows the vulnerability. This also suggests to the audience that if anything does come out at her she may not be able to do much to protect herself as she is in high heels and a long dress which is quite tight fitting.

Cinematography

In this clip, the woman looks scared and nervous after she hears a noise which is coming from inside the basement. Also this shot is a long shot which shows that she has heard something which has scared her which is shown by her body language when she pus her arms around her body to show that she is comforting herself.

This is a close up shot which is showing the audience the womans facial expression. It shows that she has a sense of fear as it looks like she has heard something and has stopped what she is doing to listen to what it is. This suggests to the audience that whatever this woman can hear it is scary because she wouldn't have a fearful look on her face if it wasn't. The effect this would have on the audience is that they would be worried for her and wonder if anything is going to happen!
