Chosen sound for one part for the sequence.
This is the sound that myself and my group have chosen to use at the start of the opening sequence as it emphasises that the scene is near a tap. This sound is also used to represent the scene where the unknown character's hands are covered in blood and the character is washing all the blood off using the tap. This emphasises the exaggeration of the water dripping sound which is good for the audience as it builds more tension for them to find out what is going on but also it allows them to hear it a lot more clearly which can make them concentrate on the sound. As they will be able to focus on the sound it can make the audience ask questions to themselves about what they think it is or what is going to happen next. This is an advantage for the audience because for them to be able to ask questions it can make them feel as though they are more involved.

Camera Shots - thriller
Within our group each of us had two shots from our opening sequence that we had to draw out. It was important that it was clear and the most specific to what we wanted it to look like when filming so we could get an understanding of the angles we want the camera at.

This is my first image showing the camera shot that I am going to be taking. This shot is an over the shoulder shot, myself and my group chose to use this because it clearly shows the audience that this person is washing blood of their hands and it makes the audience question what has happened and if this is someone else's blood. As well as emphasies the blood it is also withholding information from the audience as it is not showing the identity of this person which is effective as it keeps the audience interested.
This is the second camera shot that I am going to be taking. It is of the clip where someone is walking away from the crime, but there will be this shot of more than 1 person in difference clips. This shows the audience that it could have been different people who have beaten up the boy who is laying on the floor as the identity is hidden and it also hides from the audience how many people were actually involved. This will also build up tension as the audience will be curious to find out who it is that has hurt this boy as they feel sympathy for the one who has been getting bullied.

Vox Pops
For our vox pops myself and my group had to come up with some questions to do with thrillers and ask 4-5 people. We asked different people around 5 questions each and from what the we got back, we can see that a lot of people expect the thriller to excite them which would be done by building up tension, however not too scary as then it would fall into the category of a horror. These people said very similar things like with the age that they would expect the main character to be which a lot of them had said a young age. As we have our vox pops and have collected peoples opinions on thrillers and what they expect, we can now use this for when we are creating our own opening sequence as we will be able to pick out what will fit best for the audience and what can bring their interest into the film more. One of the main things that we got from this was people like a thriller film to build tension throughout, making it a bit spooky at times however this is something you have to be careful of as we don't want to me it too scary and spooky in case it seems like a horror instead of a thriller. Before filming I think it is effective to create a vox pops as it helps to know what to do with the film you are creating, this is because you can get a sight of how people feel about certain genres and the specific things they expect to see within the film.

Film Synopsis
The film myself and my group have chosen is going to be based around a thriller which will excite the audience and make them want to keep on watching to find out what happens....
In the first scene a young teenage boy who is called Tom is extremely, badly beaten up by a group of teenager girls from his school who constantly bully him. Tom is left on the floor fighting for his life alone in an alley.
The second scene is going to be where Tom is waking up to get ready for school which is emphasised when he stops the alarm clock. He says goodbye to his mother whom he is very close with but is dreading the thought of going to school as he doesn't want to see the bullies as his had enough of the grief he gets and just wants to be able to have a normal day at school.
In scene three it will be showing the audience Tom's day at school and what he does during his day. However it will also be showing how he doesn't have many friends and nobody seems to wants to associate with him. He also comes across very quiet and gets on with his work.
In scene four, we see a conversation between Tom and his bullies with the asking him to come out after school. They use sweet talk on him mentioning that the bullying will stop which Tom believes and finally believes that he is going to have some friends.
In scene five, the audience will be able to see how the bullies have not changed and just invited Tom out to bully him. They corner him on the way to the park and then end up beating him not stop. At this moment Tom doesn't have much of a chance with helping himself as they're is a group of them. He is then left laying on the floor with blood coming from his head not having a clue what to do as he is in danger.
In scene six it is going to show that Tom is rushed to hospital and has to bring up the courage to tell the police who it was that beat him up. This is a struggle for him to do this because he is worried about the bullies starting on him again and getting a second beating from telling it was them.
In the last scene, the boys who are the bullies throughout this film get taken to juvenile prison for the assault of Tom. At this point Tom is still recovering from his injuries.

Audience research 2- analysis
Analysis
From my set of results that I collected from my questionnaire, I have seen that 5 out of 10 people had said that the opening sequence of a film is important and 3 people had said they see it as being very important. This results in 8 out of 10 in total who find it important. Some had said different reasons why they find this but the majority had said that it makes them more interested and draws their attention, this is important as it will make them want to carry on watching the film.
9 out of 10 people had said they have seen a thriller movie before. The reason I have chosen to create an opening sequence for a thriller film is because it builds tension in the first 2 minutes and makes the audience question things which is a good thing as it makes them feel as though they are more involved.
In my questionnaire that I created I had asked what people expect when they are watching the opening sequence of a thriller film, the highest votes was for the setting this is important as the audience get an idea of where the film is going to be based around. Low key lighting was the second highest vote and this shows that people look for darkness in a thriller movie as it brings more tension for the audience and makes them feel more scared but excitement at the same time as they won't know what is going to happen. Also darkness is seen to be a fright for people and this shows it in the questionnaire results as within a thriller that's what they expect.
There is also a certain representation that people have of what the character will look like and the majority of people had said, strong, scary and creepy! This shows that people expect the characters to be un-normal in a thriller movie and expect to be a bit frightened by them.
In conclusion I am going to use a certain setting which can represent the story line effectively and low key lighting. This is because after I got my results back from the questionnaire that i handed out the majority of people had said that this is what they would look for in an opening sequence. This means that to use it would be more effective and would interest the audience a lot more. Another thing is the characters would need to look in a certain way or be dressed in a certain way as if the film is a thriller, the characters within the opening sequence would need to be able to represent this.

Conventions of chosen genre - Thriller
Conventions of a thriller
In an opening sequence of any film we have to consider the conventions of it.
This is an example of a convention in an opening sequence of a thriller because this shows that it is clearly the setting at the beginning of this film. For example this picture is from a thriller film called Inception this image is a wide shot which the shots are mainly used for the settings of films as it gives a clue to the audience on where the film is going to be based around. This setting comes across as being quite stranded.
This is another image to link to the convention 'setting'. It gives clues to the audience that the film could be based around sea and on a boat. However it also makes the audience question if the boat has a part in the film and whether its important and lastly who is actually on it!!
This is an example of another convention in an opening sequence which is titles. Typically in a thriller film sound is associated with the credits. When the credits come up on screen like company production, main actor/actress, the music is quite fast paced. However when the title comes up on screen they use a sound such as sting which can build up tension for the audience as they already know that the film is a thriller and sound is always used to make the audience feel emotions.
Another example of a convention that will be used in an opening sequence is withholding information from the audience. This is really effective and keeps the audience interested because as we can see from this clip the helicopter is hovering over the car following it, this gives clues to the audience that the people in the car may have done something bad and are trying to get away.
This shows that information about this character who is holding this image is being withheld. This is very effective because the audience would be wondering why this person is looking at this photo as it seems like violence has gone on. Also it could make them think if this person has taken this photo.
This convention is characters, in an opening sequence it will introduce the main character the majority of the time. However, it will not show the full identity it will gradually build up to it which can build tension for the audience, but still hiding some information for later on in the film.
This is an example of body language which is a convention used in the opening sequence. It shows the audience how the character is feeling, for example in this clip it would suggest that this woman is feeling scared as she is in a basement but she is also cuddling herself this emphasises that her holding her arms tight is a protection of being scared.
This is a convention of clues. This is effective in an opening sequence because it gives minute clues to the audience and makes them question things. For example this clip would make the audience question, 'why is this person looking at this photo?', 'is that blood in the picture?', 'has someone been killed?'. For the audience to be able to ask questions it emphasises that they can get involved more which keeps them interested.
This convention is establishing the genre in the opening sequence. It is important that the audience can tell what genre the film is going to be. For example in this clip the audience would be able to tell that this film will be around a thriller because the woman looks as if she has heard something and looks frightened, also it is dark around her and it is set in the basement which automatically come across scary and builds tension for the audience.
This can show the genre of a film because by the audience seeing that this man is holding a gun it wouldn't be a romantic film. Also it builds tension up for the audience with why this man is prodding at the man laying on the floor with his gun. It also makes them question who is the protagonist and if there is an antagonist.
This convention is props. This is effective for the audience because the first scene of this opening sequence is someone holding this picture. This shows that the photo within the opening sequence has an importance and means something. This prop also gives clue to the audience as they can see parts of the photo and would try to figure out what its about.
The type of props that would be convention are for example a photo like this image is showing and this is because the picture that a character is looking at or holding could link to something within the film. Also it can give clues to the audience on what has happened.

Genre 2
The Da Vinci Code- Opening Sequence
Cinematography is used in the opening sequence of this film:
This is a long shot which shows a man who looks like he is running this could suggest to the audience that he might be chasing someone or being chased. Questions that would be asked by the audience would be 'is this man running from something or someone?', 'is something bad going to happen?'. However the audience would see the big photos on the walls which could emphasise that this place is a big house or a museum.
This is a close up which shows that this man running is quite old which the audience will be able to tell from his grey beard. This would make the audience think that he is being chased as he is old and a lot of people would have sympathy for old people and wouldn't imagine them chasing someone. This close up also shows his facial expressions and he looks frightened which suggests that someone is chasing him, but not for a good reason!! This shot also shows how he is turning his head a bit which looks like he is seeing how far behind this person or thing is that he after him.
This is a medium shot which shows this old man trying to lift a picture up, this shows that there could be an escape door under a picture frame. This also builds tension as the audience would be hoping that he escapes and doesn't get caught by whatever he is running from. However it also gives the audience a gut feeling that he might not get away, this gets the audience more involved as they would be saying to themselves 'hurry!!' and this shows the excitement that the opening sequence is already giving out. We can also see that we have not seen what this man is being chased by yet and the identity of it is being hidden still at this point.
This is a long shot of someone walking and getting something out of their pocket. This shows the audience that this person here is who has been after this old man but the identity isn't being shown and all the audience are able to see is a long black cloak which makes it more thrilling and scary for the audience as it is un-usual for a normal person to be wearing this.
The mise en scene that is used in the opening sequence of The Da Vinci Code is the costume. For example the old man is dressed smartly and very well presented which suggests that he is an innocent man that is being chased for no reason. This results in the audience wondering why this old man is being chased. On the other hand the person who is chasing the old man who the audience have not yet seen the identity of is dressed completely different as they are wearing a black long cloak. This emphasises that this person is the antagonist because he is all in black which represents dark and spooky. This can also suggest that he doesn't have no feelings as he is after an old man who looks scared to death by his expressions. The setting isn't exactly clear to the audience in the opening sequence as it looks like its a museum which could make the audience think about this old man working here and danger has struck him with an intruder!! We can also tell by the facial expressions of this old man that he wasn't expecting this and this would make the audience feel a lot more sympathy for him as it suggests that he is innocent.
The editing used in this opening sequence is a short take of when this person in all black is pulling something out of their pocket, this short take makes it more exciting for the audience as this person isn't on screen for long which is emphasising and making the audience get involved by thinking about what they are going to do and if they're going to get this old man which the audience would be hoping not to happen.
The sound used in this opening sequence is diegetic sound as the footsteps and the panting of the old man running is coming from him and the breathing and panting of this man emphasises how scared he really is as being so scared can take your breath away. Hyperbolic sound is also used for the footsteps of the old man as it is emphasising that he is running away and how fast he is actually trying to get away. Incidental music is also used when the old man is running, it also starts to build up and gets a bit louder by the time he tries to escape by lifting the frame this creates suspense for the audience, it also keeps them worried about what is going to happen this this man.

Shutter Island - Opening Sequence
Cinematography is used in this opening sequence:
This is the first scene in the opening sequence of Shutter Island. It is a medium shot and the audience would be able to faintly see the outline of what this could be. This emphasises that it isn't going to give too much away at the beginning of what is about to happen! However it would make the audience ask questions like 'Is this a boat?', 'Is it on sea?', 'How many people are on this and where are they heading to?' This is effective as it keeps the audience interested in what they are about to watch.
This clip is still a medium shot like the one before. As we can see this clip is a lot more clear as the boat has come closer towards the camera. In this clip the audience would be able to see that it is a ship that is travelling across sea. In another case it still keeps information hidden from the audience as we haven't met any characters yet and the audience don't have any idea of where they are going and why they are going to this place. All they do know is that it is a ship with people.
This is a close up showing someone who's identity is still hidden. However what the audience will be able to see is that the character does look like a man from what this person is wearing.
This is a close up as well as being an over the shoulder shot which emphasises that this man is looking at himself through the mirror. The audience can also see the main part of his identity which is his face. It also shows that he is a main character as he is the first character to be shown in the opening sequence. This would make the audience wonder 'who is this man in the film?' 'why is he the main character in this film?' This close up also shows that facial expression of this man and from this clip his expressions suggest that he isn't feeling good at all as there is sweat on his face and he looks quite flustered in the face which could emphasise he doesn't want to be on this ship.
This is a two person shot which shows a conversation between two men. They are both dressed very similar as they have the same coat and hat on. This would suggest to the audience that they know each other and they both come across as being business men. By the look of them being business men, it could emphasise that they may be on this ship as a business trip. The type of questions that this clip would make the audience think would be 'why are these men dressed really smart?' 'where are they going?' 'how well do they know each other'.
The mise en scene used in this opening sequence is that the setting is around sea which suggests to the audience that this film will be based around the sea for example a beach or a ship which the audience have already seen in the opening sequence. The costume of the two men emphasise that they are dressed really smart and both wearing the same thing which could give a clue to the audience that they may be in business with each other. This can go further by suggesting to the audience on why they are on a ship together and it would seem as though they are on a business trip. The costume including the hats represent these men as being successful because the representation of successful people would come across as workmen who are dressed smartly and well represented. The prop used within this opening sequence would be the ship and this emphasises that the ship may be a big part within the film.
The editing used in this opening sequence is a reverse shot which is when the two men are having a conversation on the ship which makes the audience wonder, how they know each other, if they know each other well and if they work together by what they are wearing. A long take is used when the character is looking in the mirror at himself, this shows the audience that he is the main character because a long take would emphasise the importance of something or someone.
The sound used in this opening sequence is diegetic sound as the audience are able to hear the sound of the sea before the scene even appears on screen which already gives a clue to the audience. Also the sound of the horn from the ship is diegetic sound but also hyperbolic sound as it is exaggerated. Dialogue is used between the two men, for example the main character says 'you're my new partner' this shows the audience that these two men are meeting for the first time and will be working with each other through business.

Location Research
Photos for genres
I have taken some photos of places for the three different genres; Thriller, Romantic Comedy and Action Adventure.
Thriller
This setting would be good for a thriller film because it is quite isolated. Also it will make the audience question what is in this place which builds up tension for the audience as whatever may be in this could end up being dangerous and scary.
Action Adventure
This setting would be good for an action adventure film because it has a boat which is quite popular with action adventure packed films, for example when someone is trying to escape or getting away from someone.
Romantic Comedy
This setting would be good for a romantic comedy film because there is a bench which could emphasise a bench that a couple would sit on. Also the pigeons could represent the comedy side of it as a funny situation may happen with the pigeons and the couple.
