The sound in the opening sequence in Memento is quite sad and could make people think that the film is going to be emotional. The music is very slow paced in the opening sequence. I think the Director has chosen to use this music, to make the audience feel like the film that they are about to watch is going to be sad, also the director is trying to challenge the audience because even though the music seems slow and emotional the film could be completely different and surprise the audience as its not what they expected.
For the opening sequence in the film Memento, cinematography is used, a print screen to show this is:
This is an over the shoulder shot, which shows that somebody is holding the photo and looking at it, however the audience don't know who this person is yet.
There is also a low-angle shot which is showing the rewind of what had happened, but it shows the the man's dominance when he is standing up.
This is a close up shot which shows a photo that the character in the film is holding. This shot shows the audience what the character is actually looking at. It also gives clues to the audience and makes them question with what they think has happened themselves.
This is a medium shot which is showing the camera taking the photo back up and this could suggest to the audience that it is going back and showing what happened in the photo the character was looking at.
Mise en scene is used throughout this sequence, as the blood is showing the audience that the death of this person has been a violent death. The lighting is low key, so its more dark which makes it seem more worrying for the audience as darkness is always more scary than broad day light. The glasses from the man who had been killed, show his vulnerability as his glasses were just laying on the floor. Also it shows that he seems very different to the man who shot him as he seems more dominant and stronger.
The sequence is also in reverse which creates a sense of mystery for the audience. It is slow paced and has a long duration shot which builds up in pace when there us extreme close ups of the objects. Towards the end of the sequence there is a climax as the music builds up and the editing speeds up quite dramatically.
